About Durham
The town of Durham is situated on the northeast slopes of the Catskill Mountains, and
encompasses the central Durham Valley. Catskill Creek, a major tributary to the Hudson River, flows down the bottom
of the valley. The historic Susquehanna Turnpike (Route 145) runs up the center of town, connecting the Mid-Hudson
Valley communities around the village of Catskill, and the cities of Hudson and Kingston, to central New York State.
New York City is just two hours away via the NYS Thruway (from Exit 21). Albany is a half hour away to the northeast.
Our town is mostly rural, with many weekend homes and small resorts. The primary hamlets are East Durham, Durham,
Oak Hill, and Cornwallville, each of which have a distinct, scenic and historic character. Windham High Peak (3,500
ft elevation) anchors our town at its southwest corner. The ski resort of Windham is just over the ridge. From
the mountain slopes of town, one can see five states, and from down in the valley one almost always has gorgeous,
mountain views. Our creeks and small streams are clean enough for swimming and trout fishing. Hayfields, and horse
and dairy farms, are all around. East Durham has a long Irish cultural history, and is home to the Michael J. Quill Irish Cultural & Sports Centre, which sponsors music, dance, and other events. For a brief history of the town of Durham, please
